Introduction to Overhead Cranes

AceWorld Companies are the leaders in manufacture of the most widely used mechanical giants that is the Cranes. The cranes are the greatest supporters the manufacturing and heavy load lifting industries. We manufacture all the different categories of cranes including Overhead Cranes. They are also called as Bridge Cranes.

It is a type of crane found mainly in industrial environments. They are made up of parallel runway with a traveling bridge spanning the gap. The hoist is used as the lifting component of a crane and it travels along the bridge. The most typical part of this crane is that it is either manufacturing or maintenance applications, where efficiency or downtime is critical factor.

The most common use of Overhead Cranes is in the steel industry. At each and every step they have a very significant use. Along with this the automobile industry also uses it extensively to handle the bulky raw materials. Due to their availability in small and large sizes they can be used by both the small and large workstations. The smaller ones handle lighter loads in a work-area, such as CNC mill or saw. Along with this two industries, the paper mills also have a remarkable use of them. They use if for bridge cranes for regular maintenance requiring removal of heavy press rolls and other equipment. The bridge cranes are used in the initial construction of paper machines because they facilitate installation of the heavy cast iron paper drying drums and other massive equipment, some weighing as much as 70 tons.

This proves that they are one of the most required machines for many of the industries. To know more about Gantry Cranes, Chain Hoists and Rope Hoists Visit Website.

Different Types of Chain Hoist and its Working

There are many different varieties and assortments in which the Chain hoists are available in the market. Each one them has its own use and specialty for which it is known. The following are the different kinds that are available include differential, screw-geared, and spur-geared. The elaborate details for Differential hoist are presented here.

Differential hoists are the simplest type of chain hoist. It is made up of two sheaves on the upper block and one on the lower block. The throat and grooves of the upper sheaves are made with pockets that fit the links of the chain. One of the sheaves has one or two pockets less than the other. This difference in the number of pockets is called the differential. Each time the sheaves rotate one full turn, one side of the chain becomes one link shorter. This differential, as the sheaves are turned, provides the mechanical advantage necessary for lifting the weight.

The upper sheave, having the fewer pockets, is slightly smaller than the other sheave. The small sheave is the load side of the hoist. The differential hoist is the least efficient of all hoists, but probably the most common.
The actual operation mechanism is based on the pull of the chain that moves the wheel back and forth. As the chain is pulled around the inner load loop gets smaller or larger by the difference in the number of pockets on the wheel. As the lifting loop gets shorter the hand loop gets longer and vice versa. This is a bit of an inconvenience but the mechanism is as simple as they get. This is all about Differential ChainHoist.

Applications of Overhead Cranes

There are many different varieties of cranes available in the market. But out of all those, the Overhead crane is the one that is used in most of the industries for many purposes. It is basically comprises of parallel runways with a traveling bridge spanning the gap. It has ahoist, the lifting componentwhich travels along the bridge. If the bridge is rigidly supported on two or more legs running on a fixed rail at ground level.

The most common application of this mechanical assistant is in the steel industry. At every step of the manufacturing process, until it leaves a factory as a finished product, steel is handled by it. Raw materials are poured into a furnace by crane, hot metal is stored for cooling by an overhead crane, the finished coils are lifted and loaded onto trucks and trains by overhead crane, and the fabricator or stamper uses giant to handle the steel in his factory. The automobile industry uses them for handling of raw materials. Smaller workstation cranes handle lighter loads in a work-area, such as CNC mill or saw.

Almost all paper mills use them for regular maintenance requiring removal of heavy press rolls and other equipment. They are used in the initial construction of paper machines because they facilitate installation of the heavy cast iron paper drying drums and other massive equipment, some weighing as much as 70 tons.
In many instances the cost of a bridge crane can be largely offset with savings from not renting mobile cranes in the construction of a facility that uses a lot of heavy process equipment. The above described are some of the important uses of overhead cranes.

Qualifications required for Chain Hoist for Operation

Whenever any machine is to be used efficiently, it is very important to possess proper know how for it. This is equally applicable in the operation of Chain Hoist too. If any unqualified person is allocated to operate it then there are chances of mishap and loss to life and property too.

There should be a rule which only allows the designated and appropriately qualified personnel are allowed to operate them. The properly qualified personnel can operate the equipment safely which shall thereby can extend the equipment’s service life and reduce costs by avoiding potentially hazardous operations. The physical and mental condition is equally important along with sound technical knowledge.

The following are some of the points that are to be kept in mind while choosing the workers for this domain:
·         They must have normal hearing, vision, and depth perception.
·         It is not advisable to operate a crane or hoist if they have a known physical condition that would prevent them from acting quickly in case of an emergency.
·         Operators who are taking prescribed medication should make sure that the medication will not impair the ability to operate cranes and hoists safely.
·         Use of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited in the workplace. If you suspect an operator’s ability to be impaired for this or any other reason, notify a supervisor immediately

For the knowledge sharing purpose training programs should be organized along with some practical sessions. The employees shall greatly benefit from crane and hoist training. The employees should be cautious and not use homemade, modified, unrated, or in-certified equipment. There should be an inspection done on timely basis to know about the status of the operators’ knowledge about Chain Hoist.

Ways to maintain Chain Hoists

Any device that you use needs to be looked upon regularly otherwise it shall not give the optimum level of performance as it is expected to give. The same goes for the ChainHoist and so different points to be kept in mind for the maintenance of it are discussed here.

The following are the points to be kept in mind while using it and mainly during its maintenance:

1. Whenever any new installation or overhauling is done, there should be first trial run and only after that it should be used actually.

2. In normal use, should be carried out prior to 125% of rated load, lifting off the ground about 100 mm, 10-minute static load test and check whether it is normal.

3. Dynamic test is based on rated load weight, lift and move around for repeated testing, test check the mechanical transmission parts, electrical parts and connecting parts are normal and reliable.

4. In use, the absolute prohibition of the environment is not allowed and more than rated load and nominal closing hour number (120) of cases.

5. In the use of specialized personnel must inspect hoist regularly, found that failure to take timely measures, and carefully recorded.

6. Chain retirement criteria should be decided and strictly followed.

7. Chain oil should be used when a hard brush or small piece of wood is prohibited by hand to direct the work of the rope is oil.

8. The use of worn out parts should be given special attention and change should be made immediately.
There should be also a committee that is responsible for checking this, else it shall create mishaps.

Importance of outriggers in parts of Crane

On the whole the crane comprises of many Crane Parts and their description is outlined here in brief. The prime use of it is to carry or rather move heavy load from one destination to other. It is one of the very commonly used mechanical assistants.

As they are used to lift heavy loads to tall heights so it is important that the truck be completely stable during the lifting operation. The tires donot offer the stability needed, so the truck employs outriggers that act as balances to keep it from leaning too much to one side or the other. They use hydraulics to lift the entire truck, tires and all, off the ground. They are basically comprised of the beam, which is the leg and the pad, which is the foot. Sometimes, "floats" are placed under the pad to dissipate the force of the crane and the load over concrete or pavement. Floats are usually wood planks that are lined up to create a base that is larger than the pad itself.

The outriggers are only one mechanism used to balance the crane during lifting operations. There are also detachable counterweights that can be placed on the back of the crane on the underside of the cab. These counterweights prevent the crane from tipping forward during operation. The amount of counterweight needed for a particular lift is determined by the weight of the load, the radius of the boom and the boom's angle during operation. The 70-ton Link-Belt truck crane has counterweights that come in 4,000-pound sections. The counterweights are only used during lifts; they have to be removed before the truck can be driven. Thus it clear that the backbone of the Crane.

Applications of Overhead Cranes

Out of all the different types of cranes, the overhead cranes are the one that is used in most of the industries. It is also called as the Bridge Crane. It consists of parallel runways with a traveling bridge spanning the gap. A hoist, the lifting component of a crane, travels along the bridge. The most common application is in the steel industry. At every step of the manufacturing process, until it leaves a factory as a finished product, steel is handled by it Raw materials are poured into a furnace by crane, hot steel is stored for cooling by the bridge crane, the finished coils are lifted and loaded onto trucks and trains by it and the fabricator or stamper uses an it to handle the steel in his factory.
