Various Types of Overhead Cranes

Cranes are mechanical equipments which are designed to reduce the load of heavy work. Basically we use cranes in displacing heavy objects from one place to another.  It used at the construction sites, manufacturing units and for other purposes such as junkyards, scraps yards, factories and other areas. There are three prominent parts of cranes- hoist, wire and sheaves.

In this blog we will try to understand the different types of cranes:

Bridge cranes: bridge cranes are designed with metal beams, which run along ceiling room of the factory or warehouses. It needs two strong beams along sides, beside a trolley that travels along with it and carries the load and hoist, that is used for lifting as well as lowering the objects.

Bridge cranes can be further dissected in two categories
  • Top running bridge cranes: These cranes are used for the higher altitudes, for example its runs parallel to the ceiling and simultaneously are capable of lifting heavy loads. It can lift heavy as well lighter weights between 20 tons to 100 tons.
  • Bottom running bridge cranes: there cranes are especially designed to run on the bottom of the beam.  They are made to reduce the actual height of them and can be installed in the factories as well. However, they are not expert in bear too heavy loads.
Monorail cranes

Monorail cranes as the name suggest runs on the single rail mounted ceiling. It operates by the support of forklift. Monorail either runs from a distance or by using a car. It can be used for the several purposes for example it is used for lifting objects such as boxes, cartoons etc.

Jib cranes

Jib cranes are designed in a little compact way. It works incredibly in the smaller areas which are supported with a narrow work place. it is used for lifting lighter loads up to 20 feet.

Applications of Overhead Cranes


There are many different varieties of cranes available in the market. But out of all those, the Overhead crane is the one that is used in most of the industries for many purposes. It is basically comprises of parallel runways with a traveling bridge spanning the gap. It has ahoist, the lifting componentwhich travels along the bridge. If the bridge is rigidly supported on two or more legs running on a fixed rail at ground level.

The most common application of this mechanical assistant is in the steel industry. At every step of the manufacturing process, until it leaves a factory as a finished product, steel is handled by it. Raw materials are poured into a furnace by crane, hot metal is stored for cooling by an overhead crane, the finished coils are lifted and loaded onto trucks and trains by overhead crane, and the fabricator or stamper uses giant to handle the steel in his factory.
