The Various Forms of Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes or overhead bridge cranes are a form of cranes which are used to lift objects by a hoist fitted on a trolley, or rails fitted under a beam.  They have horizontal mobility and are very useful in numerous occasions of load lifting and displacement.  In general, a bridge crane refers to movable hoisting mechanism, travelling on a fixed runway.

Gantry cranes are usually made of steel or aluminium, and have the endurance to lift tons of weight.  The height of the gantry cranes need to be set up for specific functionality to be performed in their desired manner and convenience.  There are a host of gantry cranes available in the market.  Some of the most common among them being:
  • ·         Single girder: are used in small scale industries for lifting comparatively lighter loads, and have wheels that can be fixed in different areas of the factory.
  • ·         Double girder: much similar to the single girder, only difference being the ability to endure much heavier loads.
  • ·         Fixed height: are generally found in factories.  These types of gantry cranes cannot be changed to different levels of height.
  • ·         Adjustable height: These types of gantry cranes have ridges on their support beams, because of the reason which their height can be adjusted as per the need.
  • ·         Rail mounted: are generally found in shipyards and steel yards, where they are powered by steam or electricity to displace the loads.
These are just few of the most common variants of the gantry cranes.  After outlining your requirements, you can conduct a market study and select the best possible gantry crane for your needs.

Crane Parts – The pillars for efficiency and safety

Cranes are a common sight nowadays. It is majorly seen at construction sites where it is used to transfer loads from one place to another, which is far better than when it is done manually.  Apart from saving time, it also is more productive and saves the efforts as well.  Like any other heavy duty machinery, cranes also come with chances of minimal casualty.

Here are some ways to keep the personnel safe while dealing with cranes:

  •  Employees must not be near the swing radius of the crane
  •  All the cranes should be of certified origin, and all the crane parts should be tested by professionals at regular intervals.
  •  All of the crane parts which can move should be covered with guards.
  • Check the parts of the crane before and after usage.
  • Random inspection of the machinery pre and post use is beneficial.
  •   Using the crane when professionals are checking the parts can prove hazardous.
  •  Cranes should not carry loads heavier than its capacity.
  •  Practice double checks of the load.
  • Servicing of the crane parts should be done at apt times as they face a lot of stress and strain when in use.
  • Any signs of broken, mutilated or damaged spares or crane parts should be promptly replaced with good quality replacements.
  • When used correctly and when in top shape, cranes are a blessing for the industries which experience the displacement of heavy loads.  Proper care of the crane parts should be taken, as they are the building blocks of these extremely useful machines.
